Carson is a small Skamania County community a few miles east of Stevenson, set back from Highway 14 and running north along the Wind River toward the national forest. It is best known for its hot springs and its access to the woods, and it is one of the longest drives we make from Vancouver. Homes range from older houses close to the main road to cabins and newer places on wooded parcels farther up the valley. Several are lived in year-round; others stand empty through part of the winter.
What sets Carson apart from Stevenson, only a short drive away, is snow. Sitting a little higher and farther from the river, Carson can hold snow on roofs longer than towns right on the water. Lingering snow is where small attic problems turn into leaks. Warm air escaping into the attic melts the bottom of the snowpack, the water runs down to the cold eaves and freezes, and the ice backs water up under the shingles.

Carson cabins, attics and the roofs above them
Many Carson cabins and older homes were built with little attic space and thin insulation, sometimes with vaulted ceilings that leave only a few inches between the drywall and the roof deck. In a mild Vancouver winter that might never matter. Under a foot of Carson snow it shows up as icicles along the eaves, brown stains on the ceiling near exterior walls, and frost on the underside of the roof boards. Fixing the shingles alone rarely solves it. We look at where heat is getting out, how much insulation is there, and whether air can move from the soffits to the ridge.
Additions and dormers make it harder. A cabin that grew a bedroom wing or a shed dormer often ends up with a valley that collects snow and holds it. That valley stays packed long after the rest of the roof clears, and it is the first place ice backs up. We line valleys with ice and water membrane, and on the worst ones we switch to an open metal valley that sheds packed snow and meltwater faster.
Snow, melt and rain cycles on Carson roofs
Carson winters swing between snow, rain on snow and sudden thaws. A heavy wet snowfall followed by rain loads a roof faster than most people expect, and the meltwater has nowhere to go when the gutters are packed with ice. Snow sliding off a metal roof can rip gutters from the fascia and crush porch covers below. In between, the Gorge still sends long periods of heavy rain that soak the forest and keep shaded roofs damp, so moss is common on north slopes. Fir and cedar limbs heavy with ice also come down on roofs during cold snaps.
Planning roof work in Carson around the season
We try to do insulation, venting and valley work in late summer or early fall, before snow arrives, and we bundle tasks into a single trip from Vancouver. In winter we focus on stopping active leaks: opening ice dams at the eaves with steam where needed, tarping damage, and setting up the permanent repair for a drier stretch. We check with Skamania County on permit needs for larger jobs. If you are away for the season, we send photos and talk through the work by phone.
What homeowners in Carson call us for
Attic Insulation
Thin insulation in Carson cabins lets attic heat melt snow from below, the root cause of most ice dam leaks here.
See the detailsAttic Ventilation
Clear airflow from soffit to ridge keeps the deck cold under Carson snow so meltwater does not refreeze at the eaves.

Valleys on Carson cabins with added wings hold packed snow longest, so they need ice membrane and careful flashing.
See the detailsGutter Repair
Sliding snow and ice tear gutters off Carson fascia boards, and rehanging them on stronger hangers keeps water moving.

Detached garages and woodsheds around Carson carry heavy snow and often have thin roofs that sag or leak.

When an ice dam pushes water into a Carson ceiling midwinter, a fast fix limits damage until the season allows more.

What causes the icicles and ceiling stains on my Carson home in winter?
Those are signs of ice damming. Heat from the living space warms the roof deck and melts snow, which refreezes at the cold eaves. Water backs up behind the ice and seeps under shingles. Sealing attic air leaks and adding insulation and venting usually costs $1,870 to $4,640 on a Carson cabin. That is a typical range, and we confirm it after an attic check.
Will a metal roof on my Carson house tear off the gutters when the snow slides?
It can if nothing slows the snow. A full slab sliding off a metal roof hits gutters and porch roofs hard. Snow guards spaced along the lower part of the roof hold it so it melts off in smaller pieces. On Carson homes we also rehang gutters with heavier hangers and move downspouts out of the slide path.
Can you work on a Carson roof that still has snow on it?
We do not do full replacements on a snow-covered Carson roof, and we never ask owners to clear it themselves. For an active leak we can clear a section safely, open the ice at the eaves, and tarp or patch the spot. The full repair waits for a clear stretch of weather, which we schedule with you by phone.
