Multnomah County is Oregon's most populous county and sits directly across the Columbia from our Vancouver office. We reach the west and north parts by the I-5 Interstate Bridge and the east side by the I-205 Glenn Jackson Bridge. The county takes in Portland, plus Gresham, Fairview, Troutdale and a few smaller communities toward the Gorge. Our crews handle roof repair, replacement, gutters and storm work throughout it, from small vent leaks to full tear-offs.
No single description fits roofs across the county. A bungalow in inner Portland, a split-level in Gresham and a hillside house in Troutdale face different weather and were built to different standards. We plan each job around the house in front of us, then factor in the part of the county it sits in, since a few miles east can mean much stronger winter wind.

Multnomah County's mix of houses and roof types
The west side of the county holds much of the region's oldest housing, with early 1900s homes, bungalows and foursquares on board decking, often under two or three layers of past roofs. Moving east, postwar ranches and split-levels take over, many with simpler roofs that are on their second or third set of shingles. The far east side, around Gresham, Fairview and Troutdale, has more subdivisions from the 1980s on, plus townhome blocks with shared roofs. Cedar shake still shows up on scattered homes from the 1970s through the 1990s, usually near the end of its life. Metal roofing appears on some newer homes near the Gorge and on shops.
That range means the same leak can have very different causes across the county. On an older home it may be a tar-patched chimney. On a newer one it is more often a missing kickout flashing or a cracked vent boot. On a townhome it might be a shared ridge where a neighbor's older roof meets yours. A roof with three layers, gapped boards and an old chimney needs a very different plan and budget than a twenty-year-old tract roof, even when both show the same brown stain on a bedroom ceiling.
How weather changes across Multnomah County
The whole county shares long, wet winters and dry summers, with steady rain that keeps shaded roofs damp and feeds moss. What changes is wind. Cold east wind from the Columbia River Gorge grows stronger the farther east you go, so Troutdale and Fairview take the hardest gusts, Gresham gets a solid share, and much of west Portland is more sheltered. Wind on the east side lifts shingle tabs, peels ridge caps and drops fir limbs. When ice storms hit, tree damage spreads across the whole county, and our phones ring from every corner.
Our crews' approach in Multnomah County
Because we cross the river daily, we can schedule inspections and repairs throughout the county without long waits. After a storm we tarp open roofs first, then return for lasting repairs. For replacements, we match the build to the location, adding high-wind nailing and sealed edges on the east side. Each city sets its own permit rules, so we check with the right building department and pull permits where required.

Roofing hereGresham, OR
Gresham sits between Portland and the mouth of the Gorge, so its roofs get a harder share of winter east wind and the occasional ice storm.
Roofing hereTroutdale, OR
Troutdale sits right where the Gorge opens up, and few towns in the metro see east wind as strong or as often on their roofs.
Roofing hereFairview, OR
Fairview is a small city with many attached townhomes and planned streets, and its roofs still catch the same east wind as Troutdale next door.
Roofing hereRoofing questions from Multnomah County
Which towns in Multnomah County does your roofing crew cover?
We cover Portland, Gresham, Fairview and Troutdale, plus nearby communities in Multnomah County. Our Vancouver office is a short trip across the I-5 or I-205 bridge, so we can reach most addresses quickly for inspections, repairs and storm calls. If you are unsure whether we reach your street, call and ask.
Do roofs in east Multnomah County need a different install than in Portland?
Often yes. East Multnomah County, especially Troutdale and Fairview, takes much stronger Gorge wind than most of Portland. On those homes we use the shingle maker's high-wind nailing, sealed starter strips along eaves and rakes, and hand-sealed ridge caps. Sheltered west-side homes can do well with a standard install.
How fast can you respond to storm damage in Multnomah County?
We answer the phone 24/7. After a windstorm or ice storm in Multnomah County, we sort calls by how open each roof is and tarp the worst first. Once the weather allows, we return for full repairs. For homeowner's insurance claims, we photograph and measure the damage so you have clear records for your adjuster.
