Shingle repair means replacing a small number of cracked, missing or lifted composition shingles on a roof that is otherwise in good shape. In the Vancouver area, typical shingle repairs run $345 to $895. We match color and style as closely as possible and reseal nearby tabs so the repair holds through the next windstorm.
Shingle repair is spot work. It is for a roof that is mostly sound but has a handful of damaged pieces, like a few tabs blown off in a windstorm, a cracked shingle from a dropped branch, or a corner that curled up from age. The job is to remove the bad pieces, slide new ones in, nail them properly under the course above, and seal them so they lie flat and shed water.
Doing that well takes care. The shingles around the repair have to be lifted without cracking them, and the nails holding the damaged piece are hidden under the row above. On a roof that has baked through many summers, the surrounding shingles may be stiff, so we warm or work them slowly. We also look for nearby tabs that are loose but have not failed yet.
What shingle repair fixes and what it does not
Shingle repair handles damage you can point to: a missing tab, a cracked or torn piece, a corner that has curled, or a few shingles with exposed nail heads. These are small, local problems, and fixing them quickly keeps water from getting to the underlayment and decking. Most homeowners notice them after a windstorm or when a piece shows up in the yard. A two-hour repair now can prevent a much larger one in spring.
Shingle repair does not fix leaks that come from flashing, pipe boots or valleys, even if a shingle near those spots looks worn. It also does not address widespread aging, where shingles are brittle and losing granules everywhere. If we see that the real problem is somewhere else, we tell you and point you to the right repair. Replacing shingles that are not the cause just adds cost. We would rather fix the right thing once.
How we replace a shingle the right way
Each shingle is held by nails driven through the shingle and the top edge of the one below it, all hidden under the row above. To replace one, we break the seal on the upper course, lift it carefully, pull the hidden nails, and slide the damaged piece out. The new shingle goes in, gets nailed in the correct spot, and the tabs above are resealed with roofing adhesive. Done this way, the repair is hard to spot from the yard.
- Break seals on the course above
- Pull hidden nails without tearing tabs
- Slide in a matching new shingle
- Nail at the correct line and depth
- Reseal lifted tabs with roofing adhesive

Matching color and style
Composition shingles come in two main styles: flat three-tab shingles, common on older roofs, and thicker architectural or dimensional shingles, standard on most homes built or reroofed since the late 1990s. We match the style first, because mixing them looks wrong and can affect how water sheds. Then we match color as closely as current product lines allow. Some brands also make color blends that drift slightly from year to year.
Roofs fade over time, and some color lines are discontinued, so a brand-new shingle may look a little brighter than the old ones at first. On a back slope, that difference rarely matters. On the front of the house, we can sometimes pull a matching shingle from a hidden area, like behind a chimney, and use the new one there instead. We discuss the options before we start. You decide which way looks best.
When too many shingles need replacing
Shingle repair works best when the damage is limited and the rest of the roof is flexible. If we try to lift a shingle and it cracks like a cracker, or if granules wash off in heavy amounts, the roof may be past the point where spot repairs hold. In those cases, every repair risks breaking the shingles around it. We tell you what we find and give you a fair comparison between more repairs and a replacement.
Signs you need shingle repair
Missing tabs
A gap in the shingle pattern, often near ridges or edges, shows where a tab blew off and the layer below is exposed.
Cracked shingle
A split running across a shingle, often from a dropped branch or foot traffic, lets water reach the underlayment.
Curled corners
Shingle corners that turn up from age or heat lose their seal and lift easily in the next strong wind.
Bare granule patches
A spot where granules are worn away shows the black mat, which breaks down quickly under sun and rain.
Raised nail heads
Nails backing out push up the shingle above them and can punch through, opening a path for water.
Loose tabs that flap
Tabs that lift and drop in the wind have lost their adhesive bond and are close to tearing off entirely.
How we handle shingle repair
Call and describe damage
Call (360) 803-6405 and tell us where the damaged shingles are and how many you see, so we bring the right style and color.
Inspect the area
Our roofer checks the damaged shingles, nearby tabs and the roof's overall condition to make sure spot repair is the right fix.
Remove damaged pieces
We break seals, lift the course above, pull the hidden nails and slide out each damaged shingle without harming the neighbors.
Install and seal new shingles
New shingles are nailed in the correct spot and the surrounding tabs are resealed so the repair lies flat and sheds water.
Check and clean up
We look over the repair once more, check nearby tabs for loose seals, and clear old shingle pieces and nails from the yard.
Shingle repair costs around Vancouver
Shingle repair prices depend on how many shingles need replacing, how steep the roof is, and whether the damage is near the ridge or an edge. A few tabs on a single-story roof cost much less than scattered damage on a steep two-story roof. The ranges below are typical for 2026 in the Vancouver and Portland-metro area. Your real number comes after we look.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| A few shingles, single-story roof | $345 to $585 |
| Scattered repairs across slopes | $560 to $895 |
| Steep or two-story add-on | $145 to $410 |
The number of damaged shingles, roof pitch and height, and how hard the color is to match move the price most. See every service side by side in the roofing price guide.
Shingle wear on Clark County roofs
Many Vancouver homes, especially in Cascade Park, Fishers Landing, Felida and Salmon Creek, have composition roofs from the 1990s through the 2010s. They are often still sound, but they get hit by the cold east winds that come out of the Gorge every fall and winter. Those winds lift tabs on the east side first, so we often see a neat line of missing shingles along one slope while the rest of the roof looks fine. It is a pattern we see on almost every street there.
Fir trees add their own wear. Needles pile up and hold moisture against the shingles, moss grows under the tab edges and pushes them up, and branches that drop during storms crack shingles on impact. Catching these spots early with a small repair keeps them from becoming a leak that soaks into the decking during a long run of winter rain.
Shingle Repair questions
Can shingle repair match my existing roof color?
Usually close, but not always exact. We match the shingle style first, then pick the closest color in current product lines. Older roofs fade, so new shingles may look slightly brighter until they weather. On visible slopes, we can sometimes swap in a matching shingle from a hidden area and put the new one there.
How many shingles is too many for shingle repair?
There is no fixed number, but if damage is spread across several slopes or the shingles crack when lifted, repairs start to cost more than they are worth. As a rough guide, if you need repairs every year or the roof is losing granules everywhere, it is time to compare repair with replacement.
Can shingle repair be done in the rain or cold?
We can replace shingles in light rain, but adhesive bonds best on dry, mild days. In cold weather, shingles are stiffer and more likely to crack when lifted. For a non-urgent repair, we may schedule for a dry window. For an exposed area, we secure it right away and finish sealing when conditions improve.
Is shingle repair worth it on a roof that is 20 years old?
It can be, if the shingles are still flexible and the damage is limited. Many architectural shingle roofs in good condition have years left at that age. We check flexibility, granule loss and the condition of flashing. If the roof is close to the end, we tell you so you can decide where to put your money.
