Cowlitz County sits just north of Clark County along I-5, and our crews drive up from Vancouver to work in its towns and rural areas. The county seat is Kelso, and the largest city is Longview, right across the Cowlitz River. South along I-5 are Kalama and Woodland, and to the north is Castle Rock, where the road toward Mount St. Helens heads east. The county covers a lot of ground, from the river towns to forest roads.
The roofs we see change a lot from one end of the county to the other. Longview and Kelso have many early and mid-1900s homes. Kalama has steep hillside lots above the Columbia. Rural areas around Castle Rock and up the river valleys lean toward metal roofs, outbuildings and manufactured homes. Knowing which part of the county a home sits in tells us a lot about the roof before we even climb the ladder.

Cowlitz County towns and their roofing needs
Longview was planned in the 1920s around the lumber industry, so a large share of its homes are close to a century old, with plank decking, brick chimneys and dormers. Kelso has a similar mix of older homes along the river and on the hills to the east, plus mid-century ranches with low-slope porch roofs. Those two cities make up most of our Cowlitz County replacement work, and the jobs usually include new decking, ventilation upgrades and chimney flashing. Low-slope porch roofs on those ranches are a frequent leak source and often need a membrane instead of shingles.
Kalama and Woodland, closer to Clark County, bring steep hillside lots and river-valley homes. Castle Rock and the surrounding rural areas have more metal roofs, more barns and shops, and more manufactured homes. We bring the right materials and equipment for each type and price each building separately when a property has several. Kalama's steep lots call for roof jacks and careful staging, and Woodland's damp river setting puts extra focus on gutters and flashing.
Cowlitz County weather from the river to the foothills
Along the Columbia and Cowlitz rivers, winters are long and damp, with fog that keeps roofs wet for days and attics full of moisture in older homes. Farther inland and higher up, toward the Mount St. Helens foothills, winter brings more snow and ice, which adds load to rafters and creates ice dams on poorly insulated homes. Storms moving along the Columbia channel push wind and sideways rain into the hillside homes around Kalama. Across the county, tall firs and alders drop needles, leaves and limbs that clog gutters and damage roofs.
How we serve Cowlitz County homeowners
We schedule Cowlitz County work in clusters so the drive from Vancouver goes further, and we try to inspect and repair smaller problems in one visit. For replacements, we check with the local building department in each city, or with the county for unincorporated areas, and pull permits where required. Our phones are answered 24/7 for leaks and storm damage anywhere in the county. If your home sits in a remote spot, tell us about road access when you call so we bring the right truck.

Woodland, WA
Woodland straddles the Lewis River where Clark and Cowlitz counties meet, and its low, damp valley setting is hard on flashing, gutters and shaded shingles.
Roofing hereKalama, WA
Kalama climbs the hills above the Columbia River and I-5, so many roofs here are steep, hard to reach and exposed to storms coming up the river.
Roofing hereKelso, WA
Kelso's older homes along the Cowlitz River and on the hills to the east often need more than shingles: decking, venting and gutters usually come into play too.
Roofing hereLongview, WA
Longview was laid out in the 1920s around a lumber mill, so many roofs here sit on houses close to a century old, with chimneys, dormers and old framing to match.
Roofing hereCastle Rock, WA
Castle Rock sits along I-5 at the edge of the Mount St. Helens country, where rural homes, cabins and outbuildings see more snow and longer winters than Vancouver does.
Roofing hereRoofing questions from Cowlitz County
Which Cowlitz County towns does your roofing crew cover?
We work in Longview, Kelso, Kalama, Woodland and Castle Rock, plus the rural areas and river valleys around them as long as access is safe. Our crews drive up from our Vancouver office, and we group jobs in the county so we can reach you sooner.
Do older Cowlitz County homes usually need new decking with a new roof?
Often, yes. Many older homes in Longview and Kelso have original plank decking or soft boards from past leaks. We usually install new solid sheathing over the planks or replace bad boards, so the new roof has a flat, solid base. We price decking in advance so you know what it adds.
Is roofing in rural Cowlitz County priced differently?
Travel to remote areas near Castle Rock or up the river valleys is planned into the job, and rural properties often have several buildings to price. A typical metal shop roof might run about $7,860 to $17,430. These are typical ranges only, and we give a real number after we see the property.
