Quick answer

Wind and storm damage repair covers shingles, ridge caps, flashing and edges that were lifted, creased, torn or knocked loose in a storm. In the Vancouver area, most wind repairs run $465 to $1,880. Even tabs that look fine can have broken seals, so a full check of the windward slopes matters after a major storm.

Wind does its damage in a predictable order. It gets under the leading edge of a shingle, breaks the adhesive strip, and starts lifting the tab. After enough cycles, the tab creases, tears or blows off, and the next gust works on the row above it. Ridge caps, rake edges and eaves go first because wind hits them hardest. Storm damage repair means finding every spot that let go, not just the obvious ones.

After a big blow, we inspect the whole roof, with extra attention on the slopes facing the wind. We look for missing pieces, creased tabs, broken seals, lifted flashing and impact marks from limbs. Then we repair each area with matching materials and reseal tabs that lifted but did not tear. You get photos and a written list of what we found.

How wind actually damages a shingle roof

Composition shingles are held down by nails and a strip of adhesive that bonds each tab to the shingle below it. When wind flows over the roof, it creates lift, especially at edges and ridges. If the seal is weak from age, cold or dirt, the tab flexes. Each flex weakens the shingle at the nail line. Eventually the tab creases, which breaks the mat inside, and the next storm tears it off entirely.

The tricky part is that a creased tab can lie back down and look normal from the ground. It has lost its seal and its strength, so it will fail sooner, often in the next storm. That is why we lift and check tabs by hand on the windward slopes. Shingles that lifted but did not crease can often be resealed, which is cheaper and keeps more of the original roof.

What a storm damage inspection covers

We check more than the spots you can see from the yard. Wind damage often hides along the ridge, on rake edges and on slopes you cannot see from the street. We also look at gutters, vents, skylights and flashing, since storms bend metal and crack plastic. If a limb hit the roof, we check the decking from the attic for cracks or punctures. You get photos of each damaged area.

Repair versus replacement after a storm

If wind damage is limited to a few areas and the rest of the roof is sound, targeted repair is usually the right call for the homeowner. We replace torn or creased shingles, reseal lifted tabs, replace damaged ridge caps and refasten flashing. The roof keeps doing its job, and you avoid paying for a full replacement before it is needed. Resealing also costs far less than replacing shingles one by one.

When damage is widespread, or when the shingles are old enough that seals are failing everywhere, repair gets harder to justify. Brittle shingles crack when we lift them to make repairs, and matching color on a faded roof gets tricky. In that case, we tell you, give you the repair price, and explain why replacement may be the better long-term spend. If insurance is involved, the adjuster's findings may also shape that decision.

Working with your insurer after a windstorm

Sudden wind damage is often covered by homeowner's insurance, while age-related wear usually is not. Adjusters look for clear signs of a storm event: torn tabs, creases, missing pieces, and damage concentrated on the windward side. We document all of that with photos and measurements. If your adjuster wants to meet on the roof, we can be there to point out what we found. The claim itself stays between you and your insurer.

Signs of wind and storm damage

Shingle pieces in yard

Torn tabs, ridge cap pieces or granule-covered fragments on the ground mean part of the roof lost its cover.

Creased or bent tabs

A horizontal crease near the top of a tab shows it lifted and folded, which breaks its strength and seal.

Ridge caps flapping

Caps that lift or rattle in the wind have lost their seal and will blow off in the next strong gust.

Exposed nail heads

Nail heads showing where shingles used to be mean tabs tore away and the nails are now letting water in.

Bent flashing or vents

Metal flashing pulled away from a wall or a dented vent cap leaves a gap that wind-driven rain will find.

New leak after a storm

A drip that shows up for the first time right after a windstorm almost always traces back to storm damage.

Wind damage repair costs around Vancouver

Wind damage repair costs depend on how many areas were hit, what part of the roof they are on, and whether matching shingles are available. Ridge and edge work takes more care than open-field repairs. The ranges below are typical for the Vancouver and Portland-metro area in 2026. Your actual price comes after we inspect the roof.

JobTypical range
Reseal and repair a few tabs$465 to $890
Ridge cap replacement (section)$540 to $1,240
Multiple areas across slopes$1,120 to $1,880
Bent flashing and vent repairs$315 to $780

Number of damaged areas, roof pitch, and how hard it is to match faded shingles move the final price most. See every service side by side in the roofing price guide.

Gorge winds and Vancouver roofs

Vancouver and Clark County

The strongest winds in Clark County usually come from the east, not the coast. In fall and winter, cold air pours out of the Columbia River Gorge, and the gusts hit hardest in east Vancouver, Camas and Washougal before spreading west. Roofs in Cascade Park, Fishers Landing and on Prune Hill take that wind full on the east and north slopes. We often find the west side of a roof in good shape while the east-facing ridge and rake edges are badly damaged.

Because these are cold winds, shingle seals are already stiff when the gusts arrive, which makes tabs more likely to lift and crease. Fir limbs dropped by the same storms add impact damage and clog valleys. After a big east wind event, it is worth having the roof checked even if you only see one or two missing pieces. A quick check now costs less than a ceiling repair later.

Wind & Storm Damage Repair questions

How soon should I get wind and storm damage repair after a storm?

As soon as you can safely do it. Lifted tabs and torn shingles let water in during the next rain, and in Vancouver that is rarely more than a few days away. Most insurers also expect prompt action to limit damage. If something is actively leaking, call right away. Otherwise, schedule an inspection within the week.

Can lifted shingles be fixed with wind and storm damage repair, or do they need replacing?

If a tab lifted but did not crease or tear, we can often reseal it with roofing adhesive, which restores most of its hold. If the tab creased, the mat inside is broken and the shingle needs replacing. We check each tab by hand so you only pay to replace what actually failed.

Why does my neighbor's roof look fine after the storm but mine has wind damage?

Roof age, shingle type, how well the seals stuck at installation, roof shape and exposure all play a part. A hip roof sheds wind better than a tall gable. A roof facing open ground on the east side takes more force than one sheltered by trees or other houses. Two roofs on the same street can fare very differently.

Does wind and storm damage repair include checking my gutters and vents?

Yes. Storms bend gutters, pull them away from fascia, crack vent caps and dent flashing. We look at all of it during the inspection because a bent gutter or cracked vent can cause leaks just like a missing shingle. If gutter work is needed, we include it in the repair price or list it separately.
